John Connell is the man that set up SSDN and has only just handed over the reigns to Marie Doogan. He has been taking part in the K12 online conference, and his contribution is well worth checking out.
John’s presentation is called “Glow: Lighting Up Learning in Scotland” and is available by clicking HERE>>> (Right click and Save as… – then open the saved file with iTunes)
Lots of interesting points, and a good use of including graphics in a podcast.

Just a reminder about the Glow Training Dates at Stirling. Linda has asked that we indicate as soon as possible the range of dates that we could attend. The choices are available on the Wiki… Click HERE>>> Click on the ‘discussion’ tab of the wikipage to post your thoughts.
Accessing the Wiki September 26, 2006

In order to get access to the wiki you’ll need to set yourself up with a wikispaces ID. Here’s how you do this:
1 – Go to http://www.wikispaces.com/site/for/teachers100K (copy and paste this into the address bar of your browser if it doesn’t appear as a link)
2 – Fill in the form as follows
- Username – Choose a user name (usually your first initial combined with your last name – mine is ‘nwinton’, just make sure you’ll remember it!)
- Password – Select a password (for security it’s a good idea to include numbers and letters but this is not essential)
- Email Address – Fill in a valid email address (this doesn’t have to be your school one, in fact you are probably better using a different one in case you need to get your password sent to you during the school holidays… and yes, that is personal experience speaking!)
- Make a space - Select YES to create your own wikispace, or NO if you just want to register an ID. Setting up a wiki of your own is optional and can be done later, but you might want to set up a wiki while your doing this anyway… if nothing else, it would allow you to try things out before you do them on the main PKCGLOW wiki.
- Space Name – If you do decide to set up a wikispace think about how you might use it in class when deciding the name. One I am starting to use regularly is for my Higher class, so it is called higherenglish (http://higherenglish.wikispaces.com/) – feel free to look at it if you want to see how I use it.
- Space Visibility - Select “Private (free for educators otherwise $5/month)” – This means your space will not have adverts on it.
- Educational Use – Select this to confirm you are setting up an ID for educational purposes.
- Join – Click the button.
Congratulations! You now have your wikispaces ID… and probably your first wiki!
3 – Go to the pkcglow wiki at http://pkcglow.wikispaces.com
4 – It may say You’ve Reached a Private Space, but you can enter your login name and password. One of two things will happen at this point, either:
a – you will get straight in to the pkcglow wiki, in which case… Yay! OR
b – You will be asked to ‘Request Membership’, in which case… (Boo!) click the request membership button and we’ll get you approved a.s.a.p. OR
c – The world will end… well, probably not… but if it does your membership becomes a moot point!
Hopefully this will get you up and running. Any questions, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
GLOW – Authority Meeting September 24, 2006

Intro – Why we’re here – Opportunity for LA meeting.
Some piloting in November.
GLOW Goody bag!
More or less being left to our selves.
LINDA gave background to PKC involvement with GLOW. PKC going through the legal side of the contract.
SSDN impl plan… key one for mentors is the training plan. Asked for thoughts and ideas about how to take this forward.
Technical Issues – PKC is nearly ready. There are issues but they are eing worked on.
DVD – issues, but value of awareness raising.
Supporting for PKC piloting of Glow. – Mentor involvement will probably be crucial. Hope to include everyone.
MARK Outlines way that we (mentors) can contribute to the programme. NW asked to monitor the wiki (make it secure).
Mentor submissions and review of our experiences at SETT – by week tomorrow (29th?).
LC introduced Neil Stewart – Our RM/LTS link to Glow.
M introduced Ron from LTS. Portal will be ready (possibly) in November… at the moment use existing software (the wiki).
Proposed Training Dates… which could we be considered for? Put possible dates on the wiki for people to chase up. (Check with diary at school).
How we as a group use our time… 7days. SETT/Stig etc leaves 1.5 days to be used. How should we use this time? Possibility of having a meeting after the portal goes live… How should we arrange any meetings… use wiki as a forum – BE SPECIFIC with dates…
Awareness raising for school Headteachers…
GLOW is also going to be about the administration and management of electronic information… this will need to be thought through carefully… we will need to consider the implications.
Timetable for Portal – in school from November to Xmas – shut down for snagging – then re-open in January with home access.
PILOTING – we need to consider what we (as mentors) will try to pilot.
AND FINALLY – 18 places allocated… still looking to recruit some colleagues to fill the remaining 5 places. If we know anyone, tell them to get in contact with Mark or Linda.
Neil to set up RSS feedreader.
